WEEK 13: DESCRIPTIVE ESSAYS

Imagen
http://examwriting.blogspot.com.es/2015/02/describe-person-your-best-friend.html This descriptive essay consists of a description of a person, in this case, a best friend. In the essay, the author describes unique attributes that makes her best friend special. Firstly, there is a description of her physical traits, that is, her physical appearance and her beauty. Next, her style of dress and her likes and interests. Then, her personality and character are described including virtues and defects. The author of the essay makes use of a wide range of adjectives and descriptive words to be able to describe a person in detail. This week I have been studying for my exams and I have been reading The Beautiful Cassandra by Jane Austen.

WEEK 15: GAME OVER

In my opinion, creating a blog is an essential way to develop writing skills and learn to use both academic and non-academic style while it is entertaining and enjoyable.  Personally, it has helped me not only to develop my writing skills and creativity but also to know myself deeply. Moreover, I consider that I have learnt plenty of new vocabulary and expressions and I have been in contact with both formal and informal language, which is crucial for truly knowing a language. Furthermore, the subjects dealt with were really interesting and original. When creating a new blog entry, you learn about a topic that, maybe, you have never studied or heard about before, for instance, when we have been told to write about the different types of essays, linking words, or idioms. Perhaps, it could have been useful to write about personal experiences or opinions, which lead to developing our interpersonal skills and critical opinion respectively. In a nutshell, I am very happy to hav...

https://hbr.org/2014/08/the-value-of-customer-experience-quantified Examples related to reporting results are : - "Rationales for focusing on customer experience tend to be driven by a gut belief that it's just 'the right thing to do'." - What we found: not only it is possible to quantify the impact of customer experience - but the effects are huge. - After doing so, it soon became clear: customer experience is a major driver of future revenue. - What we found: customers who had the best past experiences spend 140% more compared to those who had the poorest past experience. - Our findings: a member who rates as having the poorest experience has only a 43% chance of being a member a year later. Compare this to a member who gives one of the top two experiences scores - they would have a 74% chance of remaining a member for at least another year. - The difference: on average, a member who gives the lowest score will likely only remain a member for a litt...

WEEK 15: GAME OVER

Imagen
Hello As a student of this subject I would like to contribute giving my opinion about my personal experience writing this blog. First of all, I must emphasize that this is the second time I have taken this course, and that by coincidence with other subjects, I have not been able to access the classes, so the blog has helped me to maintain contact with English. In addition, I would like to give my positive opinion to the idea of making a blog as an accompaniment to learning, being a didactic measure that keeps the students entertained, and at the same time making use of the new technologies. I sincerely believe that it has been an accurate measure, and that it resembles to a certain extent the learning model in other European countries. A British greeting :) Bartolomé.

WEEK 8: NARRATIVE ESSAY WRITING

These are the two links that I found where narrative essay writing is explained: https://essayinfo.com/essays/narrative-essay/ https://www.time4writing.com/writing-resources/narrative-essays/ In these websites we can see very well the process to follow in order to make a good narrative essay. First we have the prewriting process very well explained, which is the first thing we need to face in order to write a narrative essay. Then, these websites also explain how to make a good draft and how to review and edit this draft to be able to write the final version of the narrative essay. To summarize, the narrative essay: is told from a particular point of view makes and supports a point is filled with precise detail uses vivid verbs and modifiers uses conflict and sequence as does any story may use dialogue A discursive essay writing differs from a narrative essay writing in many aspects, for example, the discursive essay is written in a more informal way than the narrat...

LORCA'S CASTLE DESCRIPTION: This 13th-century castle is located in a strategic position overlooking the city. It has a long, narrow shape with a polygonal floor plan and is divided into three areas, one of which contains the rectangular Alfonsí Tower, with three sections covered by Gothic vaulted ceilings. This tower was rebuilt in the 15th century. Also outstanding is the Espolón Tower with Mudejar influences. The castle has been restored as a themed area dedicated to visitors and to the interpretation of heritage, under the name of the Fortress of the Sun. This initiative has earned Lorca a place on the shortlist of the European Commission's EDEN programme (European Destinations of Excellence), in recognition of its sustainable tourism proposal MORE INFO:  It comprises a series of defensive structures that, during the Middle Ages, turned the city and its fortress into an impregnable point in the peninsular southeast. WEEK 8: NARRATIVE ESSAY WRITING

NARRATIVE ESSAYS https://www.time4writing.com/writing-resources/narrative-essays/ https://essayinfo.com/essays/narrative-essay/ Both pages explain deeply the main characteristics of a narrative essys. Moreover, the necessary stages to start writing an essay are taken into account, having a disctinction between prewriting, drafting, writing and editing. As an example, some topics are shown, to illustrate the topic one person can choose to write an essay. To conclude, the main difference between narrative and discursives essays is that the former is linked to the explanation in detail of some anecdote or circunstance, meanwhile discursives ones focused on the argumentation of a given topic. Bartolomé.

PHRASAL VERBS CHART I find very interesting phrasal verbs related to animals. They are symbolic, intuitive, and meaningful, although they may seem quite colloquial and impolite. Other phrasal verbs that derive from animals' behaviour and attitudes are: - Chicken out : to not do something because you are afraid. - Fish for : to ask for or try to get something in an indirect way. - Leech off : to use someone for personal gain, often not giving anything in return. - Squirrel away : to store it or hide it like a squirrel stores nuts to use over the winter. - Clam up : to refuse to talk or answer. - Weasel out of : to avoid a job or responsibility, often in a deceitful and dishonest way. - Monkey with : to bother or interfere with someone or something. - Rat out : to be cowardly, to inform on/against someone or betray someone. Some expressions of persuasion: •It’s your only chance, try it. •You wouldn’t find them twice, come on! •You’ll never feel sorry about it. • Would it be possible for you to …? • Won’t you …, please? • Why don’t you …? • Please! • Not even for me/for my sake? • Just this once! • You’re not going to let me down, are you? This week I have watched some films in original version, and also I have been looking for useful researches to support my TFG hipothesis. Bartolomé.

WEEK 6: TELLING THE TRUTH

Imagen
TOP SIGNS A PERSON IS LYING 1. A change in their voice 2. They may try and be still 3. Their bodily expressions may not match what they are saying out loud 4. Direction of their eyes 5. Unusual gesticulating 6. Pointing their fingers "LIAR LIAR" Honestly, I have seen already the film so I have tried to watch some trailers in English and Spanish to understand in some way the main plot of the film. Without no doubt, only three minutes has been  enough to take some conclusions about the film. In"Liar Liar" the main character is lying continously, telling what the other want to listen, instead of telling the true. This attitude towards people seems to be funny, fact that made this film this iconic significance. This week I started to review some rephrasings to prepare my Lengua Inglesa IV exam. Bartolomé.

WEEK 5: RAVE REVIEWS

Imagen
THE BAFTA TELEVISION AWARDS:A GLITTERING HODGEPODGE THAT SKATED BY ON ENTHUSIAMS With respect to this review, it is noticeable how the author uses a sarcastic tone to refer the ceremony. Some adjectives are used to illustrate his disagreement with the The Bafta Television Awards, as can be seen during the whole review. In fact, the title suggests that the author is going to tell the audience his point of view from a ironic and sarcastic vision. Concerning to the style, the text is written in a formal way, emphasizing the use of adjectives and calificatives.  https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/2018/05/13/bafta-television-awardsa-glittering-hodgepodge-skated-enthusiasm/ During this week, I was studying and trying to do the best of myself, having in mind that holy week was coming. WEEK 9: NATURAL WONDERS

Imagen
One of the natural wonders that has always attracted my attention is THE GRAND CANYON for its immensity and colours. The description has been retrieved from a touristic webpage:  https://roadtrippers.com/stories/grand-canyon-national-park It begins with the statement that The Grand Canyon is indescribable both in words and in pictures. Expressions such as powerful, inspiring, overwhelming, and beautiful are the ones that describe The Grand Canyon more precisely. It is said to have become a National Park in 1919. It consists of a billion years old rock formed by erosion from the Colorado River after a seismic activity. Other adjectives are massive, glorious, peaceful and unforgettable. The Grand Canyon is a river valley of immense size in the Colorado Plateau which features striking and magnificent views and a rich flora and fauna. It is such a spacious and vast place that you have the sense of being lost in the middle of nowhere. Its location is in Arizona, Unites Stat...
