WEEK 8: NARRATIVE ESSAY WRITING

Imagen
These are the two sites in which a narrative/descriptive essay is explained: https://essayinfo.com/essays/narrative_essay.php https://www.roanestate.edu/owl/describe.html A narrative essay is a piece of writing that narrates a story and it may include descriptions. It can describe a writer's personal experience or an imaginary incident. In this type of essays, the writer can use sensory details creating vivid images in the reader's mind to persuade their readers that it is a true event, whereas the discursive essay is a piece of writing which presents an objective examination of a subject and a balanced discussion of the issue. It is written in a formal and impersonal fashion and each issue should be discussed in a separate paragraph with its respective topic sentences. Discursive essay writing differs from narrative essay writing in many aspects, for instance, a narrative essay is written from a personal point of view or experience. The writer may: - Tell a story whic...

WEEK 7: PERSUASION

Imagen
Persuasion is the art of convincing or making somebody do something.  Those expressions that express persuasion are:  - Are you sure..? - I can assure you that... - I really think you should... - Why don't you...? - What about...? - I can guarantee... - I'm sure... - I saw it myself. - Honestly, it's true. - Just this one! A hypothesis is a theory or explanation by means of observation that still has to be proven.  The six most common forms of hypotheses are: Simple Hypothesis. Complex Hypothesis. Empirical Hypothesis. Null Hypothesis. Alternative Hypothesis. Logical Hypothesis. Statistical Hypothesis. In this hypothesis about personality in applied psychology  https://www.pasf.org/radhyp.htm , the author asserts: "Many have made connections between personality variables and intelligence, but when they consider causative direction at all, it is that personality "causes" differential aptitudes". He speculates wondering qu...

WEEK 6: TELLING THE TRUTH

Imagen
How to detect if a person is lying? According to several websites, a person who lies: 1) Avoids eye contact. Shifty eyes are the most common feature of a liar. 2) Gives multiple versions of the same story . They explain different versions to different people or even to the same person in a matter of seconds. Their explanations are never clear or concise, but confusing. 3) Provides unnecessary explanations . A liar may stammer and hesitate when explaining things, giving detailed and irrelevant information and not answering questions directly. 4) Body language . A liar may feel uncomfortable or fidget, so they tend to stand still, cover some part of their body, change their body position more than twice or make nonsense movements. 5) Facial expressions such as eyes darting back and forth, looking up to the right, face touching or pursed lips. Although these characteristics are extended to all liars, it does not mean that all people with some of ...

WEEK 5: RAVE REVIEWS

Imagen
The review that I have chosen is a review of the Pulp Fiction movie: http://www.filmsite.org/pulp.html A review is an evaluation, a critical article or report on literature, plays, films, art, etc. However, it is structured as an essay: it features an introduction, a body and a conclusion. In the introduction, the author makes a general analysis of Pulp Fiction. He starts naming the director, Quentin Tarantino, and the year of first release, 1994. Then, he makes a tiny description of the movie and introduces some of its characteristics with terms related to the movie such as 'femme fatale' and deadly hit-men. He combines facts and opinions in his descriptions, though. In the body, he provides the readers with some facts about the movie, including the money raised with its release in comparison to other movies it competed against the same year. Later, he mentions some of the criticism of the film, providing some quotes and giving an objective opinion on the statements...

WEEK 6: TELLING THE TRUTH

These are the sites that I found where lies are approached: https://www.livestrong.com/article/177494-how-to-confront-someone-when-you-believe-they-are-deceiving-you/ https://www.truthaboutdeception.com/lying-and-deception/confronting-a-partner/how-to-confront.html https://workplacepsychology.net/2012/09/30/good-liars-their-characteristics-and-why-they-are-so-hard-to-detect/ According to these sites, a perfect liar must show these characteristics: It is necessary to be a natural performer: directed gaze to the conversation partner, smiling, head nodding, learning forward, direct body orientation, posture mirroring, uncrossed arms, articulate gesturing, moderate speaking rates, a lack of ums and ers, and vocal variety. All these characteristics are associated with being honest and likable. It is also important be well prepared: the less verifiable information is given, the less opportunity it provides for the lie detector to check. The better the preparation, the easier it is ...

WEEK 5: RAVE REVIEWS

https://www.empireonline.com/movies/shape-water/review/ This critical review about Guillermo del Toro´s film The Shape of Water shows the opinion of Olly Richards, redactor of the website "Empire". The structure of the review: the author starts writing an introduction in which he talks about the director of the film, Guillermo del Toro. It seems that he likes the director, he praises Guillermo del Toro´s work. After that, he makes a brief historical summary of the film. Olly Richards describes the main characters, Elisa and the creature. All of this by giving real facts. In the fourth and fifth paragraph, he gives his own opinion about Guillermo del Toro´s intelligence and way of dealing with the topics of the film. Finally, as a conclusion, Olly Richards again gives his opinion while telling that this film will grow with the time, that you need to mature it in order to fully understand it. In terms of language, it is usually more common to write a critical review with ...

Tongue in cheek: when you say something as a joke, although you might appear to be serious. 5. Take it on the chin: to be brave and not to complain when bad things happen to you or people criticise you. WEEK 3: IN MY VIEW. To go or not to go vegetarian?

Imagen
The trending topic I would like to discuss is to go or not to go vegetarian/vegan. These days, being vegetarian or vegan is a controversial topic within society. There is a wide range of vegetarians: the ones who do not eat meat, the ones who do not eat either meat or fish, or the ones who do not eat dairy or eggs, among others. The reasons why people make the choice to stop taking them are multiple: religion, economy, health, ethical and moral values, or even familiar customs. Although I am carnivorous, I had a time in my life in which I became vegetarian. I am very fond of vegetables, legumes and fruits. Notwithstanding, I decided to return to my former life since I could not live without meat and, besides, I realised I was running out of fat in my body. Therefore, we should raise awareness that giving up some food could be detrimental to our health. The diet we choose for our life is fundamental to be healthy and to have enough strength and energy to carry out our daily acti...

WEEK 2: ESSAY WRITING

Imagen
Here I leave some of the online writing labs for studying essay writing. I find them very useful and clear links to clear up many doubts when writing essays both for the first time and to improve your English writing. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/625/01/ https://www.oxford-royale.co.uk/articles/write-essay-hate-writing-essays.html https://owl.excelsior.edu/ Some of the main difficulties that I find when writing essays so far are research and citation. I never know how to start, where to navigate and which webs to rely on. I usually depend on google scholar or official websites, for they are reliable. Furthermore, it is always a good idea to research certain authors' papers and articles on paper which are by far much more trustworthy than any source on the Internet. As regards citation, it is crucial to avoid plagiarism, thus we must be able to paraphrase and to cite suitably. In fact, there are plenty of styles to reference, we must be aware that bibliogr...

WEEK 3: IN MY VIEW

TECHNOLOGY IN CLASS? Nowadays, technologies start to be included more and more in schools and universities. In fact, books are been replaced by tablets in classroooms, being a controversial topic for the education community. I am not convince that these technologies could be useful at all, since tablets can play the role of disturbes, which allow you the possibily to surf on the internet freely, in contrast to traditional books. There can be no doubt that technologies are fundamental part of the learning process and they are necessary for the proper development of our education. However, it seems to be that students learn more if traditional methods are present in classrooms. I am not sure if books are going to be eliminated totally but the certain fact is that we are facing a techonological revolution and education is not aside from it. At the beginning, there are no many ideas that you can write so you tend to say whatever you imagine. If we consider the fact, that there are many conectors and discursives marks to include on the website your task must be easier...In this line, the subjects of "prácticas de redacción académica" and Lengua Inglesa III & IV have been useful to improve our writting. Nonetheless, time is a crucial factor since in an exam you don not have all the time you would like. This week I have been developing my TFG which is focused on Writting Corrective Feedba...
